Polarization-selective Surfaces Composed of Trefoil Knot Elements

چکیده
In this paper, we demonstrate that the trefoil knot has the unique property that its forward scattering for circularly polarized wa ̈es exhibits a strong dependence on the handedness of the polarization. Both a single knot element as well as an array of these knots show this ( ) property which could be used in a polarization-selectï e surface PSS . Q 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Knots, Symmetry, and Scattering
We investigate the physics underlying the scattering of circularly polarized plane waves from a toroidal knot and related unknot. We find that backscattering along the axis of rotational symmetry from trefoil knots is cross polarized; copolarized backscatter is in the numerical noise. In contrast, untrefoils give appreciable backscattering cross sections for both polarizations. We also study an...
متن کاملConjugate Generators of Knot and Link Groups
This note shows that if two elements of equal trace (e.g., conjugate elements) generate an arithmetic two-bridge knot or link group, then the elements are parabolic. This includes the figure-eight knot and Whitehead link groups. Similarly, if two conjugate elements generate the trefoil knot group, then the elements are peripheral.
متن کاملClosed Essential Surfaces in the Complements of Large Volume Berge Knots
We construct an algorithm that lists all closed essential surfaces in the complement of a knot that lies on the fiber of a trefoil or figure eight knot. Such knots are Berge knots and hence admit lens space surgeries. Furthermore they may have arbitrarily large hyperbolic volume. Using this algorithm we concoct large volume Berge knots of two flavors: those whose complement contains arbitrarily...
متن کاملOn the Lower Bounds of Ramsey Numbers of Knots
The Ramsey number is known for only a few specific knots and links, namely the Hopf link and the trefoil knot (although not published in periodicals). We establish the lower bound of all Ramsey numbers of any knot to be one greater than its stick number. 1 Background and Definitions The study of Ramsey numbers of knots can be found at the intersection of knot theory and graph theory. 1.1 Knot T...
متن کاملAn Intelligent Non-Trial-and-Error Design Method for Double Screen Frequency Selective Surfaces
An intelligent design method of double screen frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) is addressed in this paper. The employed unit cell is composed of two metallic screens, which are printed on both sides of a substrate. The presented non-trial-and-error approach is investigated based on the separate design of each screen. With the help of some physical intuition and an equivalent circuit model, i...
